In 1714, Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit, a glassblower and mechanic from Gdansk, 1686-1736, developed the first usable thermometer. His scale division °F is still used today in the USA.
The division °C known to us goes back to the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius 1701-1744. He marked the melting point of ice with 0° and the boiling point of water with 100°.
